John Rand Company

Engineering excellence rooted in decades of practice: technical depth with practical judgment, from people who have lived through more than one technology era.

Quiet studio interior with glass offices and concrete floor

John Rand Company is the studio name for a team that has been solving hard engineering problems for over three decades, across industries and across technology generations.

Our roots are Midwestern: grounded, practical, allergic to theater. We operate out of Champaign-Urbana, one of the most technology-forward cities in the country. That mix of Midwest sensibility and a serious tech hub shapes how we work.

Beginnings reach back to when computing was moving from mainframes to minicomputers, and electronics was advancing at breakneck speed. We stayed close to how systems actually work, and how they can be made to work better, while the stack kept changing around us.

Long roots. Same people.

The work didn’t start with a new logo. It started with decades of bridging what you have to what you need.

Strong foundation

Built during an era of rapid technological change, with a reputation for technical excellence and practical problem-solving that still holds.

Decades of evolution

We’ve evolved alongside the tools: deep legacy and industrial work, embedded systems, electronics, and modern product and platform engineering under one roof.

Proven track record

Over thirty years of projects, from circuit-level work to complex system integrations, across multiple technology generations.

Symptom-first method

Clients usually bring what’s going wrong day to day, not a finished diagnosis. We listen, find the root, and engineer the fix through delivery.

How we show up

Selective depth

Fewer projects, higher bar. We take work we can excel at and that we’re interested in finishing well, not volume for its own sake.

Technical excellence

Work that is robust, maintainable, and documented, built to stand the test of time.

Practical judgment

The best technical option isn’t always the right business option. We balance craft with constraints.

Legacy literacy

Few studios understand older systems this deeply, which is why modernization and integration don’t become rewrite theater.

End-to-end ownership

From system design through fabrication and product surfaces: one studio, so the work doesn’t die between vendors.
